Akane is one of the main protagonists of SSSS.Gridman, an anime adaptation of Hyper-Agent Gridman, inspired by Ultraman. In order to present this figure, I must spoil a big element of the story.
Three friends and a robot, the Hyper Agent Gridman, must fight monsters (Kaijus) to protect their city. These creatures destroy buildings and kill people, heightening at several meters! Akane is one of the classmates of the hero. She is a genius and quite popular at school.
However, in fact, it is Akane who creates the Kaijus in order to kill people she does not like. She has murderous intent towards people she is not pleased with. For example, she wants to kill one of her professors who bumped into her even if he had not done it deliberately. She is very good at making custom figures with clay representing kaijus. A creature, Alexis Kerib, brings them to life, extending them from the height of a collection figure to the size of buildings in the process.
This figure is manufactured by Phat and its scale is 1/7.
We start this review with the base of the figure. It is inspired by the logo of SSSS.Gridman, we can see the four S and the dot. A pink translucent plastic is covered with mauve paint. I do not like this base. It is unnecessarily big and flashy. I think the color is way too pink. A more purple hue would have been better to suit more the clothes that Akane is wearing. It distracts from the main element, Akane. But the primary mission is accomplished, the pole supports the figure well. At least, she cannot fall. There is one metal rod and two plastic ones. Her feet are well attached, and the pegs go all the way in the holes.
I give 5/10 for the originality but I would have preferred a smaller base.
Akane is standing, but not completely still. She is bowing and seems a little shy with her legs bent inwards. But she is also cheerful and gives us a big smile! His character is definitely hard to grasp. Her double personality is very well shown. She seems uncertain, proof that she is not completely mad. Akane has short hair and her outfit is not very loose, so she seems quite tall. Her skinny legs greatly increase this impression. Her hands are hidden behind her. Does she try to dissimulate something?
Before looking at what is in her hand, let us appreciate the effect of gravity on her breasts. It is usual for Akane to wear her jacket this way, with her zip closed up to her boobs. She really wants us to notice it!
Ok, now we can discover why Akane hid her hands. It’s a figure of Dévadadan! It is this Kaiju which has been given the mission of killing the teacher of Akane because he bumped into her without offering apologies. Is it really worthy of being tracked down by a Kaiju? Even if it is not colored, you can see the detailed scales. Her nails are painted with a glossy finish.
Now Akane is holding a utility knife! We can note the discrepancy between her big smile and her desire for killing. This figure represents a scene of the anime and Akane will very soon use her knife. Very frightening!
Another shot this time with her headphones on. Notice how the cable goes in her pocket. There is a small hole, for its end, invisible when the classic head is used. With two hands and two heads, we have four possibilities. Sadly, the two heads are the same, except for the presence of the glasses and headphones. A different expression would have been more suitable.
The pose is very interesting but leads me to a question. How should Akane be displayed? From front or from back? 8/10 is the grade for the pose.
Akane wears a purple, mauve and black jacket, white shirt with a big pink bow, black skirt and dark purple tights. A lot of shading is present, except for the white parts. It is fine for me. With this figure, only a half of it is really interesting to look at. Indeed, her legs are plain. However, it must be noted that the color is not uniform.
I like the folds in her jacket a lot. Also, the little horns on the hood remind us she is linked to the Kaijus that attack the city. The colors vary from white to purple, with some shading. It is not a simple block of purple.
Her classic face is globally pretty. The eyes are beautiful, it is for me very important for a figure. I like when we can recognise the origin of a character looking into their eyes. A lot of different designs are possible. And her joyful expression is clearly visible. The glossy finish for the interior of her mouth simulates a wet surface. Nevertheless, it is a shame that her hair is badly done. The white spots are strange. Maybe they simulate light reflection? I do not like them. Anyway, I prefer the head with the glasses and the headphones because they hide the horrible seams. Some strands of hair are clearly stuck on top of the main hair structure. I do not think it is a good idea. The effect wished for is an augmentation of the volume to give a feeling of movement. But it failed. Maybe this figure is maid to be seen from a low angle shot? But in this case, it is hard to admire all the features (front and hidden arms behind her back).
I am very pleased by the possibility of having Akane with her computer equipment. She is ready to play! Her color scheme and the fact that her right glass is cracked are references to the Shattered Glass incarnation of Optimus Prime.
Impossible to go over 8/10, the heads are too badly realized.
The skirt has several white dots at the edge that are visible because of the large difference of color.
The paint is not applied uniformly, sometimes it lacks paint, sometimes there is too much paint.
The front of her hair is messy on the two heads.
All these defects are not very visible so it is a 7/10.
When I ordered her, her aftermarket price (11 000¥) was below her original price (14 000¥) and I understand why. Her design is good, displaying possibilities also, but she is far from perfect. It is not a big problem when she is discounted, but I would have been disappointed if I had paid the full price. With shipping, taxes and charges, I paid €115.20. My scale figures usually cost twice this amount. So I think the price is really good.
With a reduced price, it is a 10/10.
I am happy to have this figure of Akane. Even counting her defects, she is a good addition to my computer with her gaming style. She is not meant to be looking at from a very small distance and is not too big (well, excluding her base).
The final grade is 7.6/10. Not bad for a rather cheap scale figure.
