Tohka is the first Spirit Shido met in Date A Live. She was a danger to the population because she destroyed buildings each time she came to the Earth. She could invoke a big sword, Sandalphon and could emit waves of light. Shido had to seduce her in order to seal her powers. Afterwards, she is able to get her power back when she wants to protect Shido. So Tohka has two styles: daily life, she is joyful, naive and enjoys eating a lot; and battle mode, she is very serious and determined to win. Today, she is not here to play or eat, she is a Spirit and seems to want to fight. Hide yourself or prepare to battle!
This figure is manufactured by Good Smile Company and has a classic scale of 1/7.
So, now, let’s begin our date!
I like the base of the figure a lot! It is not a simple disc. It is textured and represents a floor cracked by Sandalphon (Tohka’s sword). The purple cracks are shining as if light power was emanating from the floor. It contrasts with the maroon/gold which is matte.
The pegs are in metal to improve stability and give a premium feeling. There is no peg for the sword, so the cracks are not ruined by it. It permits displaying Tohka without Sandalphon. But it also means that only her legs support her. There are several irregular lines which break the monotony but I wonder what kind of floor it is. Also, the paint is not monochronic so the base is not boring. This element is very important for the general feeling of the figure. It seems Tohka has just punched the floor with her enormous sword and destroyed it! We will discuss it in the next section.
This unique base merits a 8/10 (for more, it would have been not flat).
Tohka stands, with her sword sunk in the ground. The smashed base is therefore a good way to show the force of the blow. Clearly, she is not the cheerful Tohka in her “normal life” form. No, she is a Spirit who wants to fight! She is determined and her gaze warns us to keep our distance. She seems to be in a situation where she has just landed after a jump. Her back is arched and she uses her right arm to counter the force of the blow caused by Sandalphon. Maybe she is in front of an enemy and she wants to impress them.
This impression is reinforced by the shape of the dress with its many folds. A lot of wind makes her dress rise up. Fortunately, it is not enough to let us see what is under it. Well, it is a little bit detailed, more explanations in the next section!
However, Date A Live is an ecchi light novel, so her breasts are very big. It is not out of character for Tohka but it is nonetheless a shame because this figure does not need this kind of characteristic. Finally, I love Tohka’s hair! With her big dress and her hair the figure appears much bigger. They exceed the base size so Tohka will need a big room. I think it is a figure meant to be displayed at the front of a collection. She can lead an army of beautiful figures! Well, I am not sure Tohka has leading capabilities… By the way, I like characters who have strands of hair, especially if it is colored. But I wonder if it is easy to battle with hair so long.
I give 9/10 for the beautiful hair and pose.
I just talked about the shape of the hair. Also, there are a lot of shades, from pink to dark purple. So her hair is well made! Her big ribbon is also painted with a gradation, from pale yellow to dark purple.
The stockings, difficult to see in normal conditions of display, are sculpted and painted. It surprises me a little each time I see a figure with small hidden details like that. It is one of the biggest advantages over a 2D representation of a character.
We can see three main colors. The purple is largely represented in the top part of the figure, the white at the bottom and the gold throughout the figure to link the other two. All the parts are tinted, it gives the impression her clothes are glowing. The dress is slightly translucent. And it also has a hint of pink, subtle but important to avoid resembling a plastic raincoat. I do not like this type of plastic but here it is a good choice. It is an Astral Dress, an outfit which gives powers to Tohka. In the universe of Date A Live, it emits light. So using materials affected by light is a good idea. However, using an opaque white for the pointed tips of the dress is strange. Yes, in the original illustration, this part is white but the transition is too sharp in this representation.
To continue, the sword, Sandalphon! The edge is also translucent. It is a very good idea because Sandalphon produces light likewise. The blade is not bland, it is decorated with lines painted with gradations of blue and purple.
Finally, I like the details on the eyes. But I wonder if it lacks a bit of yellow. Tohka’s eyes are very complex.
Nearly perfect but the tips of the dress and the eyes make Tohka miss the perfect grade. So a 9/10 is given.
I did not see any defects in the painting of my figure. The separation between each color is clear. Several types of plastic and painting are used and they all seem to be durable.
Without defects, it is a 10/10!
I paid €197.94 for this figure. It is a really good price for this level of quality. Moreover, the reproduction is faithful to the original illustration. For that price, we also have a base that is much more than a plain plastic circle.
One of the best price-quality ratio figures I have, so a 10/10.
I love this figure! It is without a doubt my favorite figure of Tohka. When I opened the package, I was really surprised by the massive size of her hair! I did not think it would be this long! I like this feeling, I was looking forward to seeing her and she surpassed my expectations!
To conclude this review of Yatogami Tohka wearing her Astral Dress, I give her a 9.2/10.
