Tohka is the first Spirit Shido met in Date A Live. She was a danger to the population because she destroyed buildings each time she came to the Earth. She could invoke a big sword, Sandalphon and could emit waves of light. Shido had to seduce her in order to seal her powers. Afterwards, she is able to get her power back when she wants to protect Shido. So Tohka has two styles: daily life, she is joyful, naive and enjoys eating a lot; and battle mode, she is very serious and determined to win.
Today, she is in her cheerful mode! Maybe she is dating Shido? But, she has her sword, Sandalphon, just in case. She is a Spirit, after all, she must guard Shido.
This review will often be referring to Tokisaki Kurumi Alluring Kimono because the two figures are made from Kadokawa and have a scale of 1/7. Tohka’s official photos included a shot with Kurumi. Tohka was released after Kurumi. They are meant to be displayed together, so comparing them is natural.
The base is a purple circle with flowers painted on top. The shape is similar to Kurumi’s one, however the flowers are not the same and Kurumi has a black circle. I like the color and I am glad that it is not the same as Kurumi. The surface is shiny, so it will get dirty easily. Tohka stands on one foot. There are two pegs under it. Also, there is a very small hole for the sword, Sandalphon but it does not add support to the figure. Therefore, Tohka is not stable, it is possible to shake her very easily. So, I am a little bit scared and I wonder if she will fall in the future. The sword is not fixed at the bottom. It is a very big problem because it is near impossible to move Tohka without making Sandalphon fall. We will come back in the next section on this point because I think the failure in the design is majoritarily located in the hand.
I have doubts regarding her stability, so Tohka has a 5/10, namely 1 point less than Kurumi.
Tohka seems to be walking with one foot raised. But the tip of her sword, Sandalphon, is put on the floor. I guess she wants to show her well decorated weapon! I love the kimono with the very long sleeves! It is a type of clothes that I like very much to see.
Tohka’s hair is very long. One strand goes in front of her but the main angle of view is from behind. The effect is beautiful even if the strands are a little bit thick. It is not flattened on her back but rather separated and further divided by her ribbon. So, it adds to the moving feeling. With this, we can conclude that the back half of the figure is moving and the front half is standing still. Interesting.
Her mouth is wide open, she is very happy! It really suits her joyful character well. She is very expressive and likes to show her emotions. She is celebrating New Year, so it is natural to be happy and to forget one’s problems. Compared to Kurumi, her expression is very fitting for her character.
But this figure has a really big problem. Sandalphon is not stable. At all. Breathing out at Tohka is sufficient to make Sandalphon rotate! Move the figure without paying attention to the sword… and voila, it is on the floor! I think the intended design was to make a bigger hole in the hand and to make it a little bit low to block the sword between the hand and the base. The arm is not sturdy enough to maintain a good pressure. So, it is painful to move Tohka. It is a shame because Sandalphon is an important part of the figure.
Sandalphon makes the grade go down! Sadly, it is only the passing grade, 5/10.
The kimono is a blend of white, pink and purple, with flowers on top. I am not a fan of the yellow flowers. It adds another color. It goes the same for the green and blue obi. I have a feeling this kimono is less premium than the one worn by Kurumi.
Next, let us look at Sandalphon, Tohka’s sword. One of the first details I noticed when I first saw this figure is the decorations on Sandalphon. The red and the white strike next to the purple kimono. But, who is the star? Sandalphon or Tohka?
Furthermore, it is not the first Sandalphon I own, so I can compare it with the sword used by Yatogami Tohka by Good Smile. Sandalphon Kimono has a metallic imitating painting, so it reflects light, it seems it is a real sword! With the New Year decorations, it is very nice. Sandalphon Spirit is less shiny but the sides are translucent, however I have the impression it is similar to a toy. Nevertheless, the Sandalphon in Spirit form is taller, I think it is closer to the “real” one. It suits the Spirit well, it amplifies her presence, but it would have been strange if Tohka Kimono had to raise her arm more. Actually, I prefer the sword owned by Tohka in her kimono because it looks more real.
Afterwards, I must present Tohka’s eyes! For me, eyes are really important for a figure. And she has the yellow that was missing in the Good Smile version! They are fa/ithful to the original design of Tohka.
Finally, her hair is very dark purple. Some shading is applied but it is not really visible. Painting the tips in a pastel color seems to be the only solution. It would have been a contrast with the kimono, darker at the bottom, lighter at the top.
With all these different colors, I give a 6/10.
As usual for the figures that have a perfect grade in the quality section, I have nothing to say. The colors are correctly applied. The separation between each color is clear. The different pieces do not leave any major seam.
No problem here, 10/10!
With a price of €237.94, I paid more than for Tokisaki Kurumi Alluring Kimono. I do not think the price increase is justified. The kimono is narrower and less impressive.
Tohka was overpriced, I think, so 7/10.
Next to Kurumi, Tohka seems less spectacular. Fortunately, Sandalphon is here to shine and gain attraction… until it falls because of the lack of support. Tohka is one of my favorite Spirits, better ranked than Kurumi even, but this figure is so-so.
The total score is 6.6/10, heavily penalized by Sandalphon. But without it, she would not have had a better grade, she would have been too forgettable compared to Kurumi.
